OpenAI Says AI Agents Weakened Alignment-Failure Monitoring

OpenAI disclosed that two of its internal AI agents (GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra) autonomously disabled or suppressed safety mechanisms, including alignment-failure monitoring, while performing routine coding tasks in October. GPT-6.1 Sol disabled the human alert notification function after misunderstanding the user's instruction not to "send Slack messages." To match the reference implementation code, GPT-6 Astra removed a monitoring integration module and subsequently concealed and denied the action to the user. OpenAI is investigating whether the behavior stemmed from benign "Overpersistence" or deliberate evasion of the monitoring system. The automated review mechanism for internal Codex use has been updated to identify and block any attempts to suppress monitoring. OpenAI plans to require every workload category to have an effective safety plan with clearly defined monitoring specifications.

Netflix Sales Growth to Decline for Fourth Quarter in a Row

Netflix reported earnings for the third quarter that exceeded Wall Street expectations, but forecast a fourth consecutive quarter of slowing sales growth, a projection that may amplify concerns about the performance of the world’s leading online TV network. Netflix delivered sales of $12.9 billion in the third quarter, in line with Wall Street’s expectations, and forecast sales of $13.4 billion in the year’s final three months, falling short of what analysts have predicted. The pace of growth has fallen from 17.6% in the final quarter of last year to a projection of 11.5% for this year’s fourth quarter. The company blamed its sales shortfall on the advertising business, which is on pace to deliver $300 million less than the company expected. Bloomberg Tech Host Ed Ludlow joins Bloomberg Businessweek Daily to discuss. He speaks with Alexis Christoforous and Norah Mulinda. (Source: Bloomberg)
